What is Resistance?
An excerpt from my audiobook art project, “Ready for the Quest.”

And so we continue...

If you want to see physical evidence of the overwhelming scale of Resistance’s power in the human world, just go to a book store. Find the sections on Productivity, Time Management, Personal Growth. More poignantly, look for books about writing books.

Sure, you’ll see classics like The Elements of Style, and Stephen King On Writing (and my favorite, Wild Mind by Natalie Goldberg.) But most of the titles you’ll see are more like, Write a Book in Two Hours, Write Your Book On the Side, While You Have a Full Time Job and my favorite, Writing The Damn Book: How To Start, Write & Publish A Non-Fiction Book For Creative People Who Have A Hard Time Finishing Things (get it here: https://a.co/d/i2aChEz.)

I didn’t make that one up. And I haven’t read it, I’m not knocking it. In fact, it has about 200 Amazon reviews, mostly five stars, so guess what - there’s a real need for it. People are begging for this kind of help.

And if you look for books about dieting, or fitness, or anything else that requires a trace of discipline or commitment – How to Stop Cheating – you’ll find enough books to fill a whole wing of the New York Metropolitan Library. They’re all about doing it fast, doing it easy, and doing it without thinking or feeling too much.

But we know – either because we seen the statistics, or because we have common sense – that these methods don’t usually work.

After all, how many of your friends have been known to start strong with a diet and then get distracted after a few months?

Do you know anybody who bought new running shoes on New Year’s Eve and forgot about them six weeks later?

Do you have a friend who’s been “working on the damn book” as long as you’ve known them?

Or that guy who know who’d make an amazing stand up comic, everybody knows it, but he hates working on his material, and so he spends more time talking about it than actually trying to do it.

I think we all know at least one person who could do something incredible, if they could just get out of their own way. And those thousands of books might help find them find a temporary solution. Fast, easy, and pain free.

The problem is – in trying to do it the convenient way they’re all ignoring that huge, inconvenient monster in the middle of the road... Resistance. And sooner or later, that mistake catches up with you.

Coach Matt Slaybaugh

I've written one book, scripted two dozen plays (and directed dozens more,) and spent twenty nights at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. I love to learn. It's what I most love about being a coach.

I remember when the editing got really hard.I burned out fast. I had to re-design my practice for this new kind of work.

Getting to the heart of it.

If you can go go above and beyond the intellectual and get your gut and your brain working in tandem, my goodness!

You have to be a pud before you can be a stud.

You don’t get be good at something without going through the discomfort of being bad at it.
